California by Train, Bus and Ferry: Includes the California Transit Guide
Published in Paperback by California Transit Pubns (May, 1995)
Author: Kirk D. Schneider
Average review score:

Take a Trip the Easy Way
California by Train is a very informative and helpful guide to travel in the state of California. It lists points of interest served by public transit and detailed route-by-route information of all buses, trains, and ferries serving the Golden State. In addition, there are fare summaries, phone numbers, and information on intercity carriers like Amtrak and Greyhound. Much of the information is out of date now and a fifth edition is definitely needed.

A must have for traveling through California
This book makes it easy to travel around California without a car.

Contrary to popular (ignorant) belief, you can get around California by transit. Schneider's book makes the ride just a bit easier.

The book contains frequency information on buses, trains, ferries, and even intercity (Amtrak, Greyhound, etc.) information. It also has phone numbers for the transit agencies to get information. Best of all, the book also contains popular California attractions and what is the nearest transit service available.

California Crazy and Beyond: Roadside Vernacular Architecture
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (June, 2001)
Author: Jim Heimann
Average review score:

Fun-tecture
I bought this book when it first came out in 1980 and I recently noticed that a new addition was available. Well worth getting too, more pages, extra subjects (cars for instance) updated bibliography and a sparkling new layout. Author Heimann feels that architectural historian David Gebhard's term 'Programatic' does not quite capture the flavor of these buildings, I propose calling them FUNTECTURE.

A new chapter, not in the original book, is 'Current Condition' which has twenty-two photos, in color, of buildings now standing and they all look very smart and well cared for but wait till you see the photo on page 169, this shows the amazing headquarters of the Longaberger company in Newark, Ohio, famous for making baskets and that is exactly what the building looks like, seven stories high with two carrying handles reaching up to the sky...only in America! You can see and read about this lovely bit of whimsy on their website.

You will really enjoy this book if you are a fan of roadside America, especially if you have lived in California and maybe remember some of the weird buildings that are no longer around.

Fun and Informative
This book is a must-have for those of us who love the lure of the road and all it has to offer. It's sad that a lot of these wonderful icons of Americana are vanishing, but it's great that people like Jim Heimann are preserving it for future generations to see. I highly recommend this book -- lots of great photos and interesting history in a nicely organized book!

California Directory of Fine Wineries
Published in Hardcover by Ten Speed Press (April, 2003)
Authors: Marty Olmstead and Robert Holmes
Average review score:

A Toast To The Finest Winery Book Around!
This book has beautiful photography with clear, concise information and descriptions of California's very best wineries. These are the wineries that are not only known for the high quality of their wines but for their beautiful gardens, architecture, tours, tastings, and art exhibits. The format is easy to follow. It features the counties of Napa, Sonoma, and the undiscovered but notable wine country of Mendocino, showing each winery alphabetically. Additional sidebars give phone numbers, driving directions, web sites, hours of operation, and a quick-reference of each facility's wine varieties and specialties. The mix of wineries makes for a unique wine country holiday. Small family-owned cellars are listed as well as the familiar national brands. It's the best book of its kind that I've seen and the only such book found in hardcover. Travel guides don't get much better than this.

Review of the California Directory of Fine Wineries
We recently visited the lovely Napa and Sonoma valleys in Northern
California to do some wine tasting. With limited time to spend at each winery, we turned to this new hardcover guide to plan an itinerary. The book's images of each winery by master photographer Robert Holmes are striking; the information and maps are extremely helpful and accurate. Each winery is profiled within a two page spread and includes a convenient sidebar of facts about their specialty wines, tasting fees, tour and special event information, driving directions, and nearby attractions, Armed with winery phone numbers and websites we were able to call ahead to arrange for private, behind-the-scene tours. The book reads like an insiders' guide to this spectacular region. It not only lists the big "must see" destination wineries like Robert Mondavi, Beringer and Chateau St. Jean Winery but also directs readers to numerous little-known and charming family operations-like Raymond Burr Vineyards and Benziger Family Winery-that are well worth a visit. The unifying theme here is that all of the wineries profiled in this book are both recognized for making some of the world's finest wines and for being exceptional visitor destinations. Whether you're planning a trip to Northern California's wine country, as we did, or you just have a love for colorful and unique travel guides, I highly recommend this book. Even after returning home, we continue to use it as a reference of our wonderful trip to the Golden State.

California Dreaming : A Smooth-Running, Low Mileage, Best-Priced American Adventure

Sleaze and sunshine
A highly amusing look at California from the vantage point of a Scottish visitor: the criminally underfunded public institutions, the money-grubby dot com crowd, the veracity-challenged used car dealers, all against a backdrop of perfect sunshine.

California Dreaming ---does it for me!
It's the kind of book you have to renew after three weeks at the library---to go through again....Funny in kind of a non-neurotic, non Spaulding Gray style....If you've ever lived in California, it adds to the fun. This book was just a pleasure to read, to get myself out of myself...Informative about the used car buz....funny, realistic and enjoyable.....

I was here again, buying a copy of the book, looking at the reviews, agreeing with this one, and discovered it was mine.....
Oh Scooty!!!!

The California Gold Rush: A Guide to the California Gold Rush
Published in Paperback by Freewheel Pubns (January, 1993)
Authors: Eugene R. Hart and Joette Judkins
Average review score:

Rich In Golden Information!
Good books on gold rush history are hard to come by, especially one thoughtful enough to appeal to teaching usage as well. Good work and looking forward to more from an author full of potential.

Well-organized, easy to understand and comprehensive
This book puts the reader in the shoes of those who participated in the great rush to California. Of special interest was the never before published diary of Charles Brown, how miners extracted the gold from the ground and a nice sampling of the Gold Rush towns that one can still visit today. Recommended! Especially if you are a teacher.

GOOD CHP HISTORY
AS A RETIRED CHP TRAFFIC OFFICER I FOUND THIS BOOK VERY INTERESTING AND EVEN FOUND INFORMATION THAT I WAS NOT AWARE OF WHEN THE CHP WAS FIRST FORMED. THE AUTHOR DID A VERY THOROUGH JOB WITH HIS RESEARCH AND PICTURES AND HE IS TO BE COMMENDED FOR A GREAT PUBLICATION. I FAILED TO ORDER THIS BOOK WHEN IT WAS FIRST PUBLISHED AND WAS FORTUNATE TO FIND IT THROUGH AMAZON.COM AND ZSHOPS.

Good but dated...
This book is a great retrospective of the CHP, although it is a bit dated (1990). Vehicles, personnel, departments, equipment, history, organization and more! A good read!

The California Kid Fights Back
Published in Paperback by Camelot (September, 1998)
Author: Deborah Scott
Average review score:

Even better than the first book
I read this book when it was first published and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was really interesting to me. I bought additional copies as gifts for nieces and nephews, who loved it. Having known the author (from aerobics classes) I looked forward to this historically correct novel. As I now buy a copy for my nanny's son, I anxiously await any new additions to her series. Ms Scott's writing will engage your child. Your kids will like reading her book!!

Captivating! Entertaining! Exciting!
As a sequel, this book is definitely NOT a disappointment! Once again we are back with Flattop learning the Medieval lifestyle, but are plunged into a journey across the land as William must go to pay his loyalty to his brother James. Flattop follows along meeting many different characters along the way. The book weaves a tale of adventure and deception that finds the reader frustrated for Flattop and for William who is stuck in a class system that cannot easily be swayed. What will they do? Does happiness really matter? I recently read this book to a group of Grade 5 students who thoroughly enjoyed it, and were always begging for more!!! Congratulations Deborah! You've done it again! I recommend it to all those who have read "The Kid Who Got Zapped Through Time"

The California Landlord's Law Book Volume 1: Rights & Responsibilities (7th Ed)
Published in Paperback by Nolo Press (April, 1901)
Authors: David Wayne Brown, Ralph E. Warner, and Janet Portman
Average review score:

California Landlord Law Book: Rights & Responsibilities
Hardcopy book is excellent and a must especially for people with only one or two properties. I would expect that most professional landlords would know most of the information.

Guides you through the process
When we moved to a new home, we decided not to sell our old one but rent it out instead. However, we've heard a lot of nightmare stories about being a landlord, so the idea was pretty scary even though it makes sense for the long-term financially. This book gives you great advice and even examples of doing things the right way and the wrong way. I certainly had a lot of misconceptions about what was legal and what was not, and I think it would even be helpful even if one decided to hire a property management service just to understand liabilities. After reading this book, I feel comfortable that we've done everything in a legally correct way, and that we did a good job of screening our tenants. The forms provided give you everything you need to start renting out a place.

California Lighthouses

These books are good for finding the lights that are in them
There are directions and other info for finding and visiting lighthouses. They do not always show all lights for a given area. The photos are all color. I own 3 of these books. There are not many other guide books out there so if you are looking for guide books these are good to have...

One of the best lighthouse refernce books out there
I am a lighthouse lover and this book is the best refence book for lighthouses of California. It leaves very little out and is quick and easy to read. Perfect for the coffe table or bedside table. I recommend this whole line of lighthouse books to everyone.

California real estate law : text and cases
Published in Unknown Binding by South-Western College/West ()
Author: Theodore H. Gordon
Average review score:

This is an excellent, useful book.
This is a really great book, which seems to cover all the areas of California law. I've referred to the book on several occasions and have found my answer each time. The analysis was very understandable and the book gave me a strong background so I understood the law. In some cases the book told me the best approach to take to achieve whichever result I wanted. The author's approach is very practical and useful. It's a great book and a valuable reference that has really made a difference for me in several situations.

Excellent real estate resource text
Mr. Gordon's book, California Real Estate Law, is an excellent reference for the homeowners, for investors and for brokers. It covers more than just plain law, as the author includes his tips and tricks learned from his experiences as an attorney and as a broker. Sometimes it is just as important to know what the law is as to know when to use the law. The book was surprisingly readable. Some books on law are so confusing or technical as to be useless and others are so simple that they don't provide enough law to know what you're doing. Gordon's book is a good example of something done right.

It seems to cover the whole field of real estate law, from neighbors trees on your property to when to take title as community property instead of joint tenancy. It encompasses from zoning to homesteads, and from condemnation to property taxes. In short, the 23 chapters cover the whole field of law.

What I most appreciated was the expanded materials on contracts, leases, deposit receipts, listing agreements and deeds of trust. The author went over most of these documents clause by clause, explaining when to use a certain clauses and when to avoid them. I'm using it as a great reference when buying and selling properties. My son found it handy in fighting a lease eviction. I think it's an exceptional book that should be on every investor's shelf, every broker's desk, and in every homeowner's bookcase.
